The track and field season is officially underway. Seniors, Alex Wendt and Kylie Tuller, reflect on how they have improved the past five weeks. Thrower, Wendt states, “I am definitely in a different position than last year,” states Wendt. He continues, “Last year I kinda stayed at a low point for most of the season,” with him improving towards the end of May. This year, Wendt is trying a new approach by “doing the little things. You don’t want to complicate it too much.”
Similarly, short distance runner, Tuller goes on to say, “I just go out there and try my best. I used to get super nervous, but we’re here now.” She carried on with her future plans of “Just going out there and trying my best and not overthinking it.”
High jumper and long distance runner, Junior, Kolby Clark, has faced some difficulties at the season’s beginning. “I was struggling a lot with feeling sick and not being able to breathe very well, which made it hard to perform.” Over the weeks, Clark has “started to feel a lot better and less stuffy, and that’s shown in my results. My times have been improving a bit, and I feel stronger during races overall.”
To continue improving, Clark has had to make some lifestyle changes, he explains, “I’ve already made some changes like cutting back on energy drinks, which has helped, and I think continuing to focus on healthier habits will make a difference.” Besides diet, he also stated he wants to “work more on core strength since that’s something I notice during races, and I think improving that will help my overall performance.”
As these Mustangs continue to improve, be sure to go and cheer on the team at Drake Relays on April 22-25.
