Here at PCM, younger wrestlers have the opportunity to join the PCM Mat Club. Led by coaches Brandon Morris and Matt Sloan, the mat club ranges from Kindergarten through Eighth grade. The Mat club has been sending kids to state since 1998.
Both coaches bring several years of experience to the program. Sloan has been coaching for eight years, while Morris has coached for six. As the AAU state tournament is right around the corner, both coaches said they are excited to see how their wrestlers perform.
When asked what they are looking forward to, Sloan said he hopes to see “some place winners.”
However, winning is not the only thing the coaches are focused on. Morris said he is also excited for the atmosphere and the chance to watch some competitive matches.
“I’m just looking forward to the atmosphere and getting to see a lot of good wrestling,” Morris said. “Hopefully, all the kids who worked throughout the year get to see improvement.”
This year, Mat Club will have seven wrestlers competing at state. The qualifiers include eighth grader Maverick Sloan at 152lbs; sixth graders Nixon Kain at 128 lbs, Gunni Oldham at 86 lbs, Liam Findlow at 89 lbs, Bowen at 103 lbs, and Case Jones at 160lbs; and fourth grader Brody Witte at 103 lbs.
Nixon Kain placed 4th, and Brody Witte placed 5th at state.
