The long-awaited sequel to the hit movie/musical “Wicked”, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, finally came to theaters this past weekend, and let’s say it did not disappoint. From the opening line to the end credits, “Wicked: For Good”, shocked me with how well written it was and how amazingly the songs flow together almost effortlessly.
The two movies are based on the musical “Wicked,¨ written by Stephen Schwartz, while the actual book was written by Gregory Maguire. The sequel begins about a year after the original, with Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Erivo brings a powerful, yet emotional performance to her character, and it is so fun to watch. Her vocals in both movies are absolutely outstanding, from “Defying Gravity” to “No Good Deed,¨ Erivo hits every single note and does it almost effortlessly. I could even go a step further to say she does it better than Idina Menzel, but I’m still not certain yet.
On the other side of Oz, Ariana Grande gives just as good a performance as Erivo, stepping into her character like she’s been waiting her whole life to do so. Unlike the first movie, Grande’s character is more serious, mature, and also conflicted, unlike her bubbly, comedic character in the first movie. Grande’s vocals also completely shine during this movie, especially in her duet with Erivo, “For Good.¨ The emotions during this song are big enough to make a grown man cry, and Grande’s emotional delivery on this song specifically is nothing short of special.
I would say the highlight of this film was definitely Elphaba’s and Glinda’s friendship changing and evolving throughout, but also all the plot twists that come along with watching. It leaves you on the edge of your seat at some points, jaws dropped, or sobbing into your popcorn.
Overall, I would say that “Wicked: For Good” is a must-see for many reasons. It’s action-packed, gives a meaningful story about friendship, choices, and forgiveness, and is altogether just a terrific movie. I think everyone should see this movie, and trust me, you’ll be changed, for good.
