National Honor Society (NHS) has been an influential club in the PCM community for years, helping them in more ways than one. On Wednesday, April 1, new NHS members gathered for their induction and Senior Cording Ceremony.
PCM’s NHS advisor Matthew Henning explains, “NHS is a nationwide organization to recognize students who are just outstanding students,” said Henning. “They need to excel in the qualities of character, scholarship, leadership, and service; the four pillars of NHS.” This organization is student-led, and the members are all leaders, especially the five officers.
Selecting new members is a process that takes weeks. “Every year in January, I get a list of all the sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher, which makes them academically eligible to apply for NHS,” Henning states. “They get a letter, or an email rather, and once they get that, they can submit an application, and then it is my responsibility to pick out every year, five different teachers who will then be on the committee to go through the applications, scrutinize them closely, and decide which students are the best of the best.”
NHS is about more than a certificate and a cord. It’s about taking action, supporting each other, and leading with a selfless heart. The newest members are ready to start a journey, hopefully with a sense of purpose, upholding the values of NHS and making a difference in their community.
