Is Valentine’s day an Overrated Holiday?

Is Valentines day an Overrated Holiday?

A topic that is very controversial depending on who you ask during this holiday of love; is Valentine’s Day an overrated holiday? I went around asking students in a study hall how they felt about Valentine’s Day and if they felt it is overrated or not.

I started out with Sophomore Grace Taylor. When Grace was asked, “Do you think Valentine’s Day is overrated?” She stated, “Yes. It’s just like couples have the whole year. Why do they need a specific day? There is no point in Valentine’s Day if they have the entire year together. Valentine’s Day there is no need.”

When Riley Hedgecock (Grade 10) was asked the same question, she had a different answer, saying, “No, I don’t think so. I just feel that it’s a cute little day. I like it!”

Valentine’s Day originally started as a Christian feast honoring a martyr who went by the name Valentine. Why February 14? On February 14, two different people named Valentines were executed, so Valentine’s Day is kinda like a celebration of life for the 2 Valentines. 6 whole centuries after the holiday originated it started to become associated with love. This started when people realized that Saint Valentine wore a Cupid (the symbol of love) ring on his finger to help the soldiers recognize him. He would also hand out paper hearts to the Christians for their love of God.

Valentine’s Day is now used as an opportunity to get gifts for loved ones. Students were also asked what their favorite gift to get from their special person would be. Sophomore students Raegan Vannoy and Addison Hudnut responded with, “Handwritten love letter written with a goose feather and ink closed with wax and glitter roses. A box of Wonka cookie chocolates shaped like a heart with the golden ticket. A golden necklace shaped like an envelope which the letter can then fit inside. New nails and then Rapunzel music in the background of a candlelit dinner with chocolate strawberries and kid-friendly champagne.”

Most students that were interviewed mostly agree with one another that Valentine’s Day is overrated. The main reason that they said that this is overrated is that you should love and treat whoever you’re dating every day, not just on a holiday.
