PCM boys track places third at Pella with State looming

The PCM boys track team placed third in an eight team meet at Pella on May 8. The Mustangs had two first place finishes, three second place finishes and two third place finishes in the meet. The combined score of the Mustangs boys varsity track team was 104 points. They trailed only first-place Pella and second-place Norwalk.

The Mustangs two first-place finishes were by sophomore Preston VanWyk in the 200 meter dash and senior Chris Ellens in the 3200 meter run. VanWyk’s ran the 200 meter dash in 23.24. Ellens’s time was 10:30:54 in the 3200 meter run. Ellens was ahead of the competition by a wide margin. The next closet time to his was a full 1:30 off.

The 800 sprint relay team comprised of sophomore Brayton VanDyke, junior Noah Anderson, sophomore Wes Cummings, and Van Wyk finished second with a time of 1:40:68. Anderson also placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.79. Freshman Nigel Sperfslage finished second in the 400 meter hurdles running a 1:02.82. The Mustangs had a total of three second place finishes on the night.

The Mustangs had two third place finishes, and both were from relay teams. The 4×100 meter team which qualified for the Drake Relays finished third with a time of 45.55. They were less than half a second off from getting second place. The 4X800 meter relay team which is comprised of junior Brady North, junior Blake Lee, Sperfslage, and freshman Connor Fagen finished third running the relay in 9:14.34. 

The Mustangs next meet, for those who qualify, will be at State during May, 18-20.
