Final round of regionals: Maher, Mitchell move on

by Kinsey Phipps

May 16 started out like any other Monday for students: Waking up for school after the weekend. But for the PCM girls’ golf team, that day meant the end of or advancement in their 2016 season. Nerves were building as the day went on, but the girls finally started their 18-hole meet at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. Though for most of the team the season came to an end, for two Mustangs, their golf season was guaranteed another week. PCM earned third place, with a final score of 406, one point away from advancement as a team.
Though the team didn’t move on, junior Bre Maher and sophomore Madeline Mitchell advanced to the final round of 3A regional tournament.
“I didn’t know what to expect for this season, and to be a sophomore going into the second round of regionals is really exciting,” Mitchell said.
Maher carded a 93, while Mitchell scored a 95, earning fourth and fifth place, respectively. Mitchell tied for fifth place with Chloe Davis from Nevada.
“It took a lot of practice and mental toughness to get to this point,” Mitchell said. “My goals [for the next round of regionals] are to do my best and stay focused on only thinking about one shot at a time.”
