PCM Football’s historic season will go on for one more game thanks to a record-breaking win over the West Liberty Comets on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Mustangs traveled north to Cedar Falls to play at the University of Northern Iowa’s famed UNI-Dome to take on the Comets in the state semifinals. It was just the third time in school history that PCM played in the UNI-Dome, and an abundance of fans made the trip to witness the Mustangs play to move on to the finals for the first time in school history. Those spectators were not disappointed, as PCM defeated West Liberty 27-0 and made school history by earning a chance to play in the state title game.

The Comets’ defense managed to hold off the top-ranked PCM Offense for two consecutive drives, forcing the Mustangs to turn over on downs and then intercepting a pass by senior  Reed Worth. PCM got into rhythm though, and scored the first points of the game with a 41-yard touchdown run by senior Wes Cummings. The Mustangs did not need much time to put more points on the board, and senior Brayton Van Dyke scored on a pass from Worth on the next offensive drive. After a 25-yard field goal from sophomore Andrew Mitchell, the score was 17-0 going into halftime.PCM FB State Semi-Finials-568-92-92

After forcing the West Liberty to turn the ball over in their first second-half possession, Worth threw another touchdown pass to put the score at 24-0, this time going to senior Isaac Telfer. Neither team would score a touchdown again in the second half, and the final score came from field goal kicked by Worth. Cummings finished with 148 rushing yards and one touchdown for the night. Worth however threw for just 62 yards, but still had two passing touchdowns.

The Mustangs had their fifth shutout of the season while giving up 204 yards to the Comets. West Liberty’s defense did, however, keep the Mustangs under 300 yards and kept them under 30 points for just the second time this season.

For the first time in school history, the Mustangs have accomplished a record of 12-0 and will advance to the state championship game. The last remaining opponent for PCM will be the Nighthawks of Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley, who defeated Waukon and moved to 11-1 in the semifinals. The Mustangs will return to the UNI-Dome tomorrow to play for the state title, starting at 2:00  p.m.
