Senior night is a time of happiness, tears and remembrance of all the memories made in the time of the student-athletes of the sport of that time period. This last Thursday, April 25th, was the PCM Boys track meet as well as their senior night. Let’s talk about what happened. Starting off with the field events, where an amazing effort by all the athletes was shown. But topping it all was a shot put victory from senior, Mark Bussan with a throw of 43 ‘6 and a long jump victory from junior, Gavin Vangorp with a jump of 20’ 10.25. Then shortly after came about the running events, which was an absurd performance from the whole team so let’s jump into that. Starting with the Sprint Medley Relay, where the Mustangs came away with a 4th place finish from the Varsity and 6th place finish from the JV squad. Right away after came about the 3200 meter run, which was scheduled to be run by Gabriel Nessa, who couldn’t attend because of injury. We wish a speedy recovery to Gabe. So after a little bit of a hit on points, the Mustangs needed to return in the 4×800 and oh my did they. The 4×800 which was run by Joe Shaver, Kolby Clark, Carson Hansen and Coby Deraad was won in dominating fashion bringing motivation back into the team. After that stellar performance, came the Senior Recognition, where the seniors and their parents were introduced and congratulated. Right then there after came the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, in which again, was won in dominating fashion and did so with a new season best for the team. When the hurdles were then taken off the track, the 100 meter dash heats were started, where 5 out of 6 PCM runners had a lifetime personal best, and the team ended up with 1st, 9th, 10th, 14th and 20th place finishes in the event. Then came the Distance Medley Relay, where with a valiant effort from both squads, they secured a 5th place finish for the varsity and 9th place finish for the JV. The 400 meter dash was up next and with 6th different PCM competitors, 2 had personal bests and 4 had top 15 pace finishes with the other 2 athletes not far behind. After the 400, came the 4×200 where the Mustangs captured another yet another victory. Then there was the most entertaining race of the evening in the 110 meter high hurdles, where all 3 of the PCM athletes, Griffin Olsen, Gavin Vangorp and Jake Winters, came away with a season best time and top 5 finishes. After that came the 800 meter run, 2 PCM athletes competed in this event and came away with top 10 finishes. After the 800, the most impressive race of the night was ran, why was it so impressive you ask? Well because all 6 of the runners for the Mustangs had personal best times. It was truly a special race but after was one of the most difficult races in track, the 400 meter hurdles. The low hurdles did not disappoint with 2 more personal bests, a season best and just under a season best. After, came the 1600 meter, which was ran by junior, Wyatt Vannoy who as well had a personal best time and 19th place finish. Directly after, came the 4×100, which was ran by the Drake Relay qualifying quartet. The group had yet another amazing performance and victory for the Mustangs, followed by a 5th place finish from the JV squad. People when I tell you this is a fan favorite event, I am not joking. The 2nd to last event of the evening was the 4xWeightman relay and wow did the fans enjoy it. The varsity group finished 5th out of 7 and unfortunately the JV was DQ’d due to a dropped handoff. And now, for the final event of the evening, there was the 4×400. All with sub minute or less time splits the squad ended with a 3rd place finish and locked up the win for the PCM Mustangs their home meet and gave their seniors a very good last hooraw at home.
