Over the past couple of seasons, UCONN (University of Connecticut) men’s basketball has been dominating the court. After winning the NCAA Championship on Monday, April 8th, the program now has won 2 national championships in a row and has won 6 national championships total in program history. So let’s talk about how that came to be. This season UCONN went 37-3 overall, while going 18-2 in their conference. The NCAA champions went 17-0 at home games, 8-3 at away games and 12-0 at neutral games. At the team’s best this season, they had a 13 game win streak, which was the biggest of the season. The whole starting 5 averaged at least 11 points a game as well as close to 5 assists and 5 rebounds. The formula for a great all around team on the floor every night. With their close to perfect regular season on top of winning the Big East conference championship, they locked in a number 1 power ranking in their region going into the NCAA tournament. Now, it was time to see if UCONN was going to live up to all the hype. Starting off the tournament with a win over number 16, Stetson, 91-52, it was a great start for the Huskies. Next, came the second round where they faced number 9, Northwestern. The Huskies put on another dominating performance beating the Wildcats, 75-58. Then came the Sweet 16, where UCONN met a very impressive, number 5, San Diego State. As good of a run as the Aztecs were having they had no match for the UCONN Huskies, who with another dominating effort, won 82-52. The Illinois Fighting Illini, is the only team standing in the way of the Huskies from getting to the Final Four for the second year in a row. One of the most popular games of the year was about to be played and well it lived up to the hype. Although the Fighting Illini lived up to their name, their fight just wasn’t enough. The Huskies took them to school, winning the Elite 8, 77-52. So the Huskies move onto the Final Four for the second year in row to face the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have defied all odds and made it to the Final Four where they headed to face the intimidating sight of UCONN. But their historic run had come to an end when they met the Huskies. UCONN beat the Tide, 86-72 to move on to the NCAA Championship game where they would face Zach Edey, and the Purdue Boilermakers. Zach Edey, the biggest, baddest player in current college basketball has been tearing up the game all season long but this game would prove if he and the Boilermakers were as good as everyone has been saying all season long. UCONN had played a lot of really good teams leading up to this game but Edey and the Boilermakers were something that the, seemed to be unstoppable squad had yet to see all season. But the Boilermakers, as good as they were, just didn’t have enough to stop the steamrolling UCONN Huskies, who went on to win another NCAA National Championship, 75-60. So with another championship, UCONN just added even more to their legacy of being a dominant force in the college basketball world. Do you think that the Huskies will win another championship next season, or hand over the crown to a new King of the game? Only time will tell but until then, UCONN will continue to be the unstoppable force that nobody seems to have an answer for.
