With 4 state qualifiers this 2023- 24 season. The 4 state qualifiers for this year’s Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament were Sophomores, Kaliber Fry at 113 and Tucker Wheeler weighing in at 144. Senior Wrestlers who made it to the stage were Hewitt Brinegar, weighing 150, and Remington Fry at 138. On February 14, all 4 wrestlers took to the mat,
The first wrestler was Sophomore, Kaliber Fry, weighing in at 113 pounds. K. Fry opened the State Tournament with a win by points on an early takedown over his opponent. In K. Fry’s second match, he was down with a score of 14 to 2. Later, he was eventually pinned. On the second day of the State Tournament, competing in the constellation bracket, Fry won his match by a major decision that morning to stay alive in the tournament. Then, in his second match on day 2, Fry was defeated by a pin.
The second wrestler was Central Dutch College Commit, Senior, Remington Fry, weighing 138 pounds. R. Fry loses his first match by points, sending Remington into the constellation bracket, and giving him a chance to battle back. In Fry’s second match, he was once again defeated by points in a 2 to 1 loss. This second loss caused Remington to be eliminated from the Tournament on day 1.
The third wrestler was Tucker Wheeler at 144 pounds. Wheeler won his first match in a crazy comeback, as he was down 5 to 0 early, but came back in the last couple of moments, and won 6 to 5. In Wheeler’s second match, he was trailing 2 to 0, but with another crazy comeback, he won 4 to 3. This was a huge win for Wheeler, as he is now in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Wheeler lost to No. 1 ranked Kittleson out of Osage on day 3 of the tournament and will battle in the constellation bracket on day 4 for a chance at the podium,
The fourth and final wrestler for our PCM Mustangs was senior, Hewitt Brinegar, weighing in at 150 pounds. Brineger won his first match. It started 2 to 2, but Brineger took things into control after that and won by a final score of 10 to 4 in match 1. In Brineger’s second match, he lost 8 to 0, which means he’ll have to wrestle the next day in the constellation bracket to stay alive. In Brinegar’s third match, he stays alive, and wins, giving Brinegar a chance to come back after all. In Brinegar’s fourth match, he ends up losing by a score of 8 to 5. He fell one place shy of a podium finish.
