Our PCM Girls Varsity Basketball team has been given the opportunity to host their first round of regionals at home vs Grinnell on February 10th. The varsity team is currently 14-6 for the season, and 10-4 in conference.
Junior Addison Steekhoek talks about what her team has done to prepare and how she is feeling about hosting for the first time in her high school basketball career.
“Our team has been going very hard in practice. All the girls are pushing each other to be the best version of themselves. We practice the game plan over and over until we get it right. I am so excited to host this year. I think that the atmosphere of our gym has been electric lately. That carries over to our team and that’s when we play our best ball.”
Season leaders right now are sophomore Jorja Teeter with 116 rebounds, and Junior Addison Steenhoek with 245 points and 43 assists.
This team loves to spend time with one another, and they do a lot of different forms of team bonding. Senior Elle Davis talks about her favorite times spent with one another and her favorite team bonding activities.
“When both the girls and boys’ basketball team went to Jethros in Des Moines after playing our Saydel game at Wells Fargo Areana. My favorite time we spend together is when we are getting ready for games in the locker room or riding on the bus to a far away game jamming to music the whole way there.”
The 2023’24 season started off quite challenging for most girls because they had never played in a Varsity team before. The girls varsity team is a very young team with two juniors, two sophomores and one freshman starting. Making them a very young team. Freshman starter Lila Milani talks about her first year being on Varsity basketball.
“I feel good about starting as a freshman, I’m glad I got the opportunity to play with the upperclassmen and to learn from them. I am preparing for Saturday by watching film and going over my plays in my free time. I am very excited to host my first ever regional basketball game at home!”
PCM has not been able to host a Girls Basketball regionals game since 2016-17. For seven years, the girls have always traveled many hours to often get beat in their first round. This year they are the favored team and feel very confident going in.
The team is preparing by having a shooting practice on Saturday morning and going out for tea bombs or breakfast afterward to spend time with one another and get their bodies moving before the big game that night. Go Mustangs!!
