The PCM football team was seeking revenge against West Marshall on Oct. 6 for last season’s heartbreaking loss in State Center. The Mustangs got off to a slow start and went to halftime barely tied 14-14 after a Gavin VanGorp quarterback sneak with two seconds left in the half.
“My mindset was I gotta be focused and I gotta win this game for us,” Junior runningback Adrien Robbins said. The Mustangs came out focused in the second half as Robbins went for a 61-yard touchdown on the third play from scrimmage, which opened the floodgates for PCM. A three-and-out from the defense gave the ball back to the offense and Robbins took advantage quickly going 64 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the drive. Robbins finished the game with 409 yards on 33 carries, good for 12.4 yards a pop, and a shattered school record for rushing yards in a game.
“I found out (about the record) in the middle of the game and I was just really excited that me and my teammates got to celebrate (the rushing record),” Robbins said. The Mustang defense would continue to do its job and force another three-and-out, the offense dialed up a deep shot on the first play that was just out of the reach of receiver Gabe Hobbs. They called Robbins number again after that and he made multiple people miss on the way to a 45-yard touchdown. The Trojans finally were able to get something going on offense with a mix of run and pass on the way to a touchdown drive capped off by Ben Gonzalez three three-yard touchdown run. The PCM offense wasn’t done though, sitting in the I-Formation for the entire eight-play, 72-yard drive that finished with a Gavin VanGorp head-first dive over the pile at the goal line on a nine-yard touchdown run.
The defense got their first takeaway of the game with an interception by Riley Graber on the second play of the drive after a holding penalty. The return on the interception was fumbled and recovered by Griffin Olson and ended up being a net gain of zero from the spot of the pick.
Robbins would have one more carry on the night on the first play of the drive, going for 18 yards and breaking multiple tackles. As he ran off there was a standing ovation from the fans in the stands and on the hills.
“I was really excited for my teammates because some of those guys got to go in and get some reps. That’s always fun to watch, I was just really happy,” Robbins said. Shay Burns would score his first career varsity touchdown on the drive with a nine-yard run. The Mustangs would go on to win 49-20. They will play again in the first round of the playoff tomorrow and look for Robbins and company to continue the six-game winning streak.
